If you are looking for a peer to peer (P2P) network that works best with older Windows platforms, one which is reliable and is now run and developed by the user communities themselves, then what you need is a program called WinMX. WinMX is a P2P file exchange program that was extremely popular in its day. In fact, in 2005 it was the Number One download source for music (you have to think back to the days before iTunes, etc). With it you can download music, movies, images, etc for free.

WinMX is considered quite a safe network where you can share files with others up to a maximum size of 2GB. You also have a maximum usage limit of 5000 listed files (but the limit for unlisted files is currently unknown).

WinMX comes with a built in chat function using its Private Message function, in multiple languages. You can adjust the settings to allow you to block messages if you choose. Bots are available to make things more lively, play games etc. And if you prefer you can use upload managers to control others' access to your files and block some of them.

WinMX is outstanding for its great search results and speed. It has obviously been replaced in popularity by others like torrents, gnutella, eMule etc, but still remains a viable alternative for those of you running older systems. And because it's free and run by users, why not give it a try?
